Green for Profit or Green for the Environment? Ben & Jerry's

Hey Everyone!
Welcome to my SNHU Blog!

Today we will be discussing an organization which I believe is both socially and ethically responsible. Ben & Jerry's has always been an inspiration to me when it comes to ethics and is a perfect model for companies striving to be ethically responsible. The company strives to be ethical both internally and externally to customers as well as the community around them.

If you go to Ben & Jerry's website and look under "values" you see a list of amazing goals the company strives for. One of these goals is social responsibility. "To operate the Company in a way that actively recognizes the central role that business plays in society by initiating innovative ways to improve the quality of life locally, nationally and internationally". In addition to this, they also have a little section about the things the company cares about such as democracy, racial justice, fair trade, GMO labeling, etc.

The scandal, however, came about in the year 2000 when Ben & Jerry's was sold to Unilever, a major corporate company. Many were shocked and angry that a company that supposedly cared about the environment and the community was so easily bought out. Granted, the values of the company as well as the name never changed, but was it all just for profit to begin with. Many times a company will associate itself will an emotion or ideal but do they actually care or is it all just a marketing scheme to make more money?
